They can also be preventative treatment. An example of this is when a tooth is heavily restored and has cracks.

A crown is not only going to look better than a heavily restored tooth, but also be a lot stronger, prevent future breakages and possible loss of the tooth altogether. Another example is amalgam restorations. Amalgam can potentially be very harmful to your overall health and also damaging to your teeth.
